French Costume Jewellery - Page 1

This section includes various French costume jewellery items. French (and German) Galalith differs from the American in as much as it contains casein (a milk protein). They are all an early bakelite type material which was very much in use during the deco years for the production of inexpensive and stylish modernist jewellery. The outbreak of the second world war lead to the cessation of production of galalith for civilian use, because casein was in short supply. Galalith was very useful for the mass production of articles because it did not blunt lathes as was easily polished. It was also durable and could be produced in an amazing range of colours and even be made to resemble tortoishell, pearlised, marbled and glittery products. Most pieces were made in the 1930s and are new/old unsold stock. Some other items may be more recent - see descriptions.
