Original 1950's Watercolour
This lovely picture was hand painted in pastel and watercolour, and is signed and dated 1954. This, and the next one below are both by the same artist and signed - although indistinctly. They are very similar and in the style of the Varga calendar girls, and are in their original gilded frames measuring 28 by 22 inches. Condition is very good and original. Note that this item and the one below (Art 527) match, and are both by the same artist and would make a wonderful pair.

Ref: Art526 . . . £160 each or £300 the pair

Theatrical Painting - Hanging Around
Stunning, original 1920's water colour and gouache painting. On the back of the card it is painted on, it says it was produced by Lido Press, Strand, London. I have several of these original paintings and they appear to be all original theatrical and poster paintings from the same company and probably by the same artist but none are signed. This one is titled Hanging Around. It was displayed about 6 years ago at the Fortnum and Masons Art Deco Exhibition. It has been recently framed in a black wood frame that measures 30 inches by 23 inches (64cm x 43). In excellent condition and an amazing find, beautifully painted.

Photogravure by Walery
This original photogravure was published in Paris in 1923 by Lucien Walery. Because of the nature of his photographs, (which were considered very risque to say the least in the 1920's), he published them in his pseudonym which was Laryew. Walery was just a re arrangement of the letters in his name. Many artists did this at that time. He was a Lithuanian artist born in 1863, he moved to Marseilles and then on to Paris following in his fathers footsteps as a photographer to the rich and famous. Whilst in Paris he befriended Josephine Baker and photographed the girls of the Folies Bergere. He is considered by many to have been a true master of art deco photography. I have several of these photogravures and apparently all the ladies in them were dancers from the Folies Bergere, each one is signed Laryew in pencil and numbered with a Roman numeral. It is interesting to note that many of the poses in these pictures are similar to the poses of statues of this same period. It is easy to see where the statuary artists got their inspiration from. They are printed on thick card that measures 12.75 inches by 9.75 (32cm x 25). Condition is vintage but very good as they have been kept in a thick protective sleeve. You can buy them unframed or I can frame them for you in a contemporary frame. Unframed £135 each or framed £150 each.
